We're looking for an Indirect Tax Manager to be part of the in-house tax team at Virgin Atlantic. This role will support the Group's permanent Indirect Tax Manager whilst they play a key role in the implementation of our new ERP system.

This role has responsibility for managing indirect tax compliance processes and will work closely with the Senior Tax Manager to ensure Global indirect tax compliance is maintained. You will have responsibility for delivering technical advice and compliance support to the Virgin Atlantic Group, whilst managing risk and controls on a day-to-day basis to ensure the Group's UK and overseas indirect tax compliance requirements are met. The role requires working closely with Working Capital, Financial Accounting, Procurement, Legal and the wider business to ensure an appropriate tax control framework is maintained.

Day to day

Some of your key responsibilities as our Indirect Tax Manager will be: 
  • Managing the UK VAT compliance process and controls, including timely and thorough technical review of the monthly return process ready for sign off by senior management. Reviewing and approving VAT treatment of new income streams, transactions and contracts. Providing advice on business activity and projects to internal business functions as required to ensure projects are delivered compliantly and tax efficiently.
  • Supporting with Customs Duty compliance and ensuring the business meets its reporting obligations under AEO, End Use, CFSP, Airworthiness and other reliefs. Activities will include auditing work undertaken by Customs Agents and working closely with the wider business to ensure appropriate controls and processes are maintained.
  • Management of the APD reporting process, including provision of technical advice, review of monthly returns, periodic audits and providing advice to the business on enhancing systems configuration.
  • Working closely with the Indirect Tax Manager to maintain an appropriate tax control framework and manage indirect tax risk to an appropriate level. This will involve reviewing, testing and documenting processes to identify areas where controls and integrity can be enhanced and ensuring the group has appropriate accounting arrangements.
  • Responsibility for overseeing world-wide indirect tax compliance processes such as VAT, GST and Sales and Use returns and mitigating tax risks through effective communication with overseas offices.
  • Identifying opportunities to optimise the group's cash position through tax initiatives, timely compliance and appropriate planning.
  • Managing external advisors, scoping advice and negotiating fees. Sourcing and managing the delivery of external advice, ensuring advice is implemented correctly and projects are seen through to completion.
  • Proactively monitoring changes in legislation and identifying the need for in-depth projects to support business and compliance requirements.
  • Identifying the need for and delivering training to stakeholder departments to ensure relevant knowledge and awareness of tax sensitive issues.
  • Supporting the Indirect Tax Manager and Head of Tax with correspondence to HMRC/Overseas Tax Authorities including VAT group registrations, clearance applications, AEO compliance, technical positioning papers, ECNs, audits, quarterly calls and annual BRR meetings.

About you

In addition to the above, we are looking for our successful candidate to demonstrate the following:
  • We're looking for an experienced specialist with practical experience of managing compliance processes. Ideally you will have CTA or equivalent and years of experience providing and implementing technical advice.
  • The ideal candidate will be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment and have an established and broad experience of VAT issues, including reverse charges, financing transactions, supplies of aircraft and passenger transport, TOMS, Partial Exemption, Customs and Excise taxes, cross border transactions, US Sales and Use taxes and AEO compliance, combined with the confidence to correspond effectively with HMRC and other stakeholders. It is advantageous if you have had exposure to APD and Stamp Taxes.
  • You will need to possess excellent communication skills to work cross functionally with senior management, influence business decisions, have the ability to analyse complex and diverse documents, make appropriate evaluations and recommendations, and have the technical skills to be the subject lead on projects.
