In a nutshell
As Head of Health Services you will shape and lead a team of health and operational professionals who deliver effective, medical advice to the business, our employees, passengers and crew through the provision of occupational health, passenger health and aviation specialist medical services.
In this role you'll provide clear, independent and evidence based medical advice to the Virgin Atlantic (VAA) and Virgin Holidays (VHOLS) Safety & Security Review Boards (SSRB), and the leadership team of the day. Ensuring that VAA passenger and employee health programmes remain best in class and our response to health threats and events are in line with international industry best practice.
Your role will be to foster and maintain good relationships with national and international industry bodies, regulators, and suppliers. Leading the development and implementation of the company’s health strategy, ensuring safe, efficient and compliant care to passengers, crew and organization.
Day to day
Work with key internal partners to develop long term corporate health strategy for passenger, crew, and organisational health in line with priorities set by the SSRB.
Provide effective direction and support to key members of the health team in developing and delivering the resultant health strategy.
Lead strategic response to major health events: E.g: Fume, Zika, Pandemic.
Act as escalation point and professional role model to the VAA health services team and provide strong, facilitative, effective clinical leadership, and coaching.
Continue to develop the high performing team ethos with employee engagement hitting target. Developing and maintain a clear succession strategy as well as redundancy planning across the team to support the operation.
To work with the VP Health, Safety, & Security and associated Health, Safety & Security leadership team to review and inform strategic pathways. To evaluate and critically appraise current service provision, continuously striving for improvement, cost efficiency and service excellence, in support of airline operations.
As the companies most senior health advisor you will provide accurate health information to the business and to management safety groups as required in all areas of passenger and employee health. Including but not limited to: Passenger Fitness to fly, In Flight Medical Events, Pilot Health, Crew Health, Overseas travel health, Complex case management, Return to work advice within Long Term Sickness, and Public Health promotion.
Advise in planning for the implementation of any future legislation challenges or initiatives i.e EASA, IATA, CAA, AsMA, RaeS, etc.
Advise on maintaining suitable medical accreditation and professional proficiency (GMC, NMC) across all relevant areas (e.g. SEQOHS).
Provision of all health services required in support of VAA/VHOLS, specifically including: Occupational Health, Aviation Medical Services, and Passenger Health. Whilst minimizing operational and organizational disruption and inefficiencies whilst delivering these services.
Ensure any current or emerging medical risk that pose impact to Virgin Atlantic and/or Virgin Holidays are suitably mitigated and communicated.
Provide out of hours advice and direction to respective teams and or leadership in the event of an emergency or critical business need.
Deliver other defined projects as determined by the VP Safety & Security or as agreed within the Safety and Security Leadership Team.
Accountable for the VAA Medical Services budget. Ensuring full return on investment is demonstrated and achieved, whilst annually writing and delivering a zero-based annual budget.
Lead procurement processes for critical VAA medical services (including one which provides part of aircraft fleet MEL (Minimum Equipment List)), whilst maintaining high-levels of SRM (Supplier Relationship Management).
Take pro-active steps to minimize in-direct operational costs e.g. lost time due long-term sickness, flight medical diversions etc.
Lead in the delivery of any associated Capital investment project required within medical services including identification and substantiation in-line with company processes.
Do you have extensive experience within
occupational, passenger or aviation medicine? Are you an expert leading a
multi-functional team within an operational environment, alongside experience
in the management of complex medical problems/issues?
To be successful in this role we’re also
looking for the following desired qualifications:
* MFOM – specialist in occupational medicine.
* On UK specialist register in Aerospace or Occupational Medicine or on the GMC GP Register (or eligibility to enter register)
* GMC Registered Medical Practitioner with license to practice (or ability to obtain such)
* Diploma in Occupational / Aviation Medicine if not on specialist register in either
Further required skills and experience:
* Previous significant airline experience
* Great interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate at all levels of the organisation.
* Proven ability to manage budgets and financial constraints
