We will become UK’s flag carrier. To deliver on our promise to be the most loved travel company we need to refactor, optimise and advance our code. This will be delivered by a brand new Operations Decision Support (ODS) team. Their mission will be to develop a new set of tools using Operational Research, Machine Learning (ML), Artificial Intelligence (AI) and advanced optimisations and simulations to resolve issues that concern our fleet, crew, ground services, network, competition and customer.

At Virgin Atlantic you will work shoulder to shoulder with other software engineers, data scientist, operations experts and front-line staff to shape the future of the aviation industry. Day to day

You will apply your data science, machine learning and operations research skills to bring innovative advanced analytics tools to the team. You will have the opportunity to closely work with all management levels, contribute your ideas and creativity and work in a fast-paced environment with a focus on digital. For this specific vacancy you will be working in close cooperation with BCG/KLM and our Operational department that seeks to make VAA the most data-driven and intelligent airline in the world. At ODS, we apply operations research standard methodologies, build machine learning models, and optimisers to support the complex airline operation.

ODS works with the newest technologies in the area of (big) data and distributed computing and employs groundbreaking machine learning and operations research algorithms. We are front-running and you'll work with ambitious, highly-skilled colleagues to make an impact on the industry.

You can look forward to co-create with gate agents, cabin personnel and operations experts at VAA and other airlines. Close coordination with other data scientists, operations research experts and develop software in an agile way as an integral part of your work.


About you

We are looking for passionate and talented Data Scientists with focus on optimization, for curious builders who are biased towards action, communication and are thriving in a fast-paced and international environment.
General background:
Completed Master’s degree in a relevant field with heavy focus on data science such as computer science, (applied) mathematics, statistics, and operations research.Firsthand experience in applying Data Science, ideally in a corporate setting.

Specific Data Science (ML) knowledge:
Deep understanding of machine learning models, for instance logistic regression and gradient boosting.
Ideally, knowledge of artificial neural networks and operations research.

Coding background:
Proficient knowledge of programming models in Python.
Knowledge of data management in SQL is preferred, ideally knowledge of large data technology such as Apache Hadoop, Apache Spark and Hive.

Soft skill repertoire:
High competency of solving complex problems, communicating with partners and working as a team.
Proficient in English.
